Lunacy!

Recently as we drove to Mombasa, it dawned on me that some motorists will cause accidents deliberately, regardless of the consequences, who lives or dies, who survives or gets maimed. We were on our lane, the left (that’s the Kenyan way, isn’t it?), when one car simply pulled out from between a line of trucks from the opposite direction, even though there wasn’t much distance between us.

One would think on realizing he couldn’t overtake in time he would slow down and try to go back to his lane, but he didn’t. He kept coming, at quite high speed too, and we, though we had the right of way, had to swerve to the pavement to avoid a head on collision with the mad driver. And he drove off like nothing had happened.

So what if there had been no pavement, but a cliff instead? What if a cyclist had been on the pavement? What if a matatu had decided at that moment to use the pavement as a way of beating the jam? I shudder to imagine all the scenarios that could have meant an accident for sure.

Kenyans motorists, please, let’s show some respect for life. It’s not a rehearsal. Beyond here it’s a totally different ballgame!
